Intention for the New Year

This is what I have set as my one word intention for the year 2026. No resolutions, just an intention. This intention has so many facets; Health of the body, health of the mind, health of the soul.

I want to focus on being the best version of myself that I can, by being intentional about what I do to remain healthy as the year goes by.

Making sure that I am scheduling and attending all doctor (dentist) appointments throughout the year, whether they be for maintenance, wellness, or treatment .

I am also continuing to eat low carb, being careful about what I allow to enter my body.

Taking Cheddar (our golden retriever) on walks as often as possible, which helps with not only body health (his and mine), but truly ties into mind and soul health as well.

I have begun seeing a therapist regularly. Funnily enough, her name is Rachel also. She and I have so many things in common (she plays the clarinet, she likes to crochet, her mother just went through a cancer journey almost identical to mine, etc.) that it feels like I am talking to a version of myself that was trained to help others with their mental health.

In addition to therapy, I plan to read consistently throughout the year. I want to branch out into new genres that I haven’t read before, for expansion of the mind.

I have also started good habits to help keep me organized. I have a planner for home and a planner for work. By keeping those schedules and tasks separate, it has relieved a lot of anxiety I have had due to bringing work home with me and vice versa.

I will continue to practice self care by participating in things that just generally make me happy; playing clarinet, crocheting; playing Minecraft with family😆. These are activities that let me get lost in the moment and stop focusing on negative things that bring me stress.

I am continuing to do yoga (if you haven’t been to Red Rock Yoga yet, definitely check it out! They are wonderful, amazing people). With yoga comes the practice of mindfulness- learning to tune out the world and all of it’s distractions, as well as your own inward thoughts and feelings- just learning to be and appreciate where you are.

I am also taking the time to reflect and re-examine my faith; particularly when it comes to loving, supporting others and co-existing in a world where not everyone believes in the same things. This has been and continues to be very personal journey. God is no longer in a church or within organized religion for me. God is everywhere; in me, in you, in nature (the beautiful sunrises and sunsets, the fog of breath on a cold morning, the new flower just beginning to bloom), in the space between breaths. I choose to believe in a loving God who said we ALL are his children. We all are welcome and accepted; the sinner and the saint. I plan to continue to explore the true depths of my feelings and thoughts around faith as this year continues.

I hope to hold steadfast and strong to this overarching intention. I am of the mindset that you have to take care of yourself if you want to be able to help someone else (put your oxygen mask on first). I definitely learned that lesson throughout my cancer journey. I want to be able to help others as we navigate through this anomalous time in our country, so I intend to keep myself healthy to be able to do so.
